In an industrial context where customisation, efficiency and reliability are key, the packaging sector requires automation solutions capable of adapting to a wide range of production scenarios without compromising standardisation. This success story explores the collaboration between Dexis Iberica and Rollon in the development of XYZ Cartesian palletisers, designed to meet the specific needs of multiple sectors.
The packaging sector is characterised by a high degree of diversity: varying product formats, frequent batch changes, differing regulatory requirements and constant pressure to improve energy efficiency and productivity. In this context, the ability to listen to customers and translate their needs into specific technical solutions is essential.
However, customisation must not come at the expense of maintainability or scalability. For this reason, machinery manufacturers seek systems that integrate standardised, easily replaceable components, thereby reducing downtime and simplifying maintenance operations. The key lies in striking the right balance between bespoke design and industrial modularity.
This approach is well known to Dexis, the division specialising in industrial processes within the Descours & Cabaud group. Founded in 1782, the group has undergone significant evolution over time. Through inorganic growth based on the acquisition of small and medium-sized enterprises, it has expanded its value proposition. Initially focused on industrial supply, the company has progressively developed expertise in fluid technology (pneumatics and hydraulics), industrial safety and, more recently, in the manufacture of mechatronic components and robotic solutions. Today, its main sectors of operation include machine tools, metallurgy, packaging and food & beverage.
Within this transformation, segmentation by business unit has played a key role. The OEM division is strategic in supplying motion control and linear motion solutions to machinery manufacturers.
As José María Mora, Director of the OEM Division at Dexis Iberica, explains: “The strategy is to integrate high-level solutions to deliver comprehensive technically coherent projects, acting as a true technology partner”.
Development of Cartesian palletisers for a wide range of industries
In this context, Dexis has begun a shift towards more integrated solutions to respond to the growing demands of machinery manufacturers, who increasingly seek to incorporate functional subassemblies or partially integrated solutions into their production lines without compromising flexibility or modularity.
Dexis’ OEM division has therefore developed a range of palletisers based on XYZ Cartesian structures, designed to serve various industrial sectors. This approach enables the company to address a wide range of requirements in terms of load capacity, cycle time, precision and available space.
“Machinery manufacturers are increasingly demanding value-added services that enable them to expand their offering to include complete solutions. In response, Dexis has developed a range of modular palletisers that can be adapted to specific applications without compromising production efficiency,” explains Mora.
The result is a flexible automation solution capable of adapting to different dimensions, production rates, box types and levels of operational complexity.
A bespoke solution based on Rollon technology
To meet the challenges of durability, efficiency, flexibility, rapid adaptability and optimised energy consumption, Dexis has integrated Rollon linear axes into its systems.
The solutions employed include the following linear actuators:
- Smart System: used primarily on the X and Y axes, they offer an excellent balance of structural and dynamic rigidity, ideal for long-stroke, high-speed movements.
- TH: designed for applications requiring high precision and rigidity, they are used in gripper systems. Their compact design allows integration into confined spaces without compromising performance.
- ELM: characterised by robustness and long service life, they support a high number of operating cycles, maintaining reliability even under intensive conditions.
“These solutions stand out for their customisability based on standard platforms, allowing each system to be tailored to the manufacturer’s needs,” explains Franc Bejines, Sales Manager at Rollon.
Standardisation and customisation: striking the right balance
One of the project’s distinguishing features is the use of standardised components within highly customised solutions. This significantly simplifies maintenance and replacement operations, reducing costs and service times.
“The in-depth knowledge of linear systems shared by both the Dexis and Rollon teams enables us to optimise the design and ensure efficient integration,” says José María Mora. “There is constant coordination between the two companies, which facilitates the resolution of complex technical challenges.”
A notable example is the optimisation of the Z-axis in a project with space constraints. Thanks to close collaboration between the two engineering teams, a standard product was adapted by reducing its dimensions and integrating it seamlessly into the available space.
This approach demonstrates how intelligent customisation can build on established industrial solutions, combining flexibility and robustness.
A forward-looking strategic partnership
The relationship between Dexis and Rollon is built on years of ongoing collaboration, founded on trust, shared knowledge and common goals. This partnership has helped strengthen Rollon’s presence in the Spanish market while enabling Dexis to offer distinctive solutions to its OEM customers.
The added value lies not only in the product itself, but also in the joint ability to design and implement solutions tailored to real market needs. This collaboration opens up new opportunities for development in a sector where advanced automation will continue to play a decisive role in competitiveness.
